Fractals are a very useful tool to create very realistic looking images. Almost any natural phenomena that displays some type of fractal property can be recreated using a variation of one fractal or another. It is quite a process to create very realistic images, but with determination and a lot of tweeking of the fractals you can produce images that are hard to discern from the real thing.
