Case Study: Solar Wind Electron Moments

This data set consists of 9789 data points acquired over 1 month (Feb. 80) from the ISEE-3 mission. 11 parameters are available: Date, seconds, UT time, electron density, bulk flow speed, bulk flow azimuth, the minimum total temperature, the maximum total temperature, and angle of maximum temperature, the heat flux, and the heat flux azimuth. It was obtained in ASCII format via the NSSDC and converted to XmdvTool format.

High Minimum Total Temperature

This image shows a parallel coordinates view of the data, with a brush formed by dragging over the region with high minimum temperature data. As can be seen, the majority of this data occurred over a single day, and has corresponding high values for maximum total temperature.

Statistics on Individual Parameters

This image shows a modified Tukey Box Plot for each dimension of the data covered by the brush. The red circle shows the median value, the red box shows the outline for the middle 2 quartiles, the red dashed lines shows the points within 1.5 times the 25-75 quartile range of the median, and red dots indicate outliers. The blue circle shows the mean value and the blue angle brackets show the standard deviation.

Glyphs of Data

This display of each data element as a glyph again shows that most of the values with high minimum temperature occurred over a block of consecutive readings.
